Soho Grand's NYE Gala: An Ode to Capote's Infamous Masked Ball
Ring in the New Year at Soho Grand’s Black and White Ball, honoring Truman Capote’s legendary 1960s masquerade with masks, champagne, and live DJs.
It’s been nearly six decades since Truman Capote gathered a glittering constellation of friends inside the Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom for one of the most storied parties in New York history. Photographs from that night capture guests dressed to the nines in strict black and white, their identities hidden behind ornate masks as they danced beneath candelabras in a landmark setting.
More than 540 guests arrived for a night of revelry, complete with midnight servings of spaghetti and chicken hash—and, above all, the rare chance to mingle across the full spectrum of society. European aristocrats, novelists and artists, Hollywood and Broadway stars, heads of state, filmmakers, socialites, and even friends from the Kansas town that inspired Capote’s newly famed In Cold Blood gathered under one roof. Notable attendees included Frank Sinatra, Mia Farrow, First Lady Lynda Bird Johnson, Audrey Hepburn, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Italian Princess Luciana Pignatelli.
Each New Year’s Eve, the Soho Grand continues Capote’s legacy, transforming the hotel’s entire lobby floor into a contemporary black-and-white gala complete with masks, black tie attire, and champagne flowing well past midnight. In true Capote fashion, guests are invited to mingle incognito, masked and mysterious as they ring in the New Year to sounds by Jenny Albright, Miss Monroe and Malcolm Flex.
Esteemed guests will enjoy an evening hosted by soon-to-be-announced special guests, with tiers of hors d’oeuvres and a premium open bar until 1 am.
Attire is black tie, masks are mandatory, and dancing is non-negotiable.
