The world-renowned interior designer Bill Sofield has been collaborating with Soho Grand since its inception. Sofield incorporates distinct architectural materials and styles that celebrate the two great moments of SoHo’s history: the grandeur of the 1870’s Gilded Age and the luxurious artistry of the 1970s, while mirroring the sophisticated, art-forward nature of the neighborhood surrounding it. He used historic SoHo materials such as the glass-bottle staircase, majestic masonry columns, and intricate cast-iron detailing—all of which create a seamless leap from the streets outside to the hotel rooms inside. Artistry and workmanship are celebrated with hand-painted elevator doors, hand-painted silver leaf ceilings in the salon, and authentic Edison bulbs from Paris.
As the first luxury boutique hotel in downtown Manhattan, Soho Grand’s guest rooms and suites take cue from the public spaces and feature original furnishings and high-end fixtures. Sofield employed rich materials and textures in palettes of chocolate, champagne and taupe. An appreciation for SoHo design history and artistry is visible in the selection of artwork, custom and vintage decor, wire-glass mirrors, as well as the playful guest room wall coverings found in the bathrooms, designed by famed New Yorker illustrator Saul Steinberg.
