Soho Grand Honors Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball

New York, 1966, 10 pm. Novelist Truman Capote, enjoying the enormous buzz from his newly published “In Cold Blood,” invited a myriad of his friends from every walk of social strata to a formal masked ball in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. Over 540 of these “friends” showed up for his now legendary Black and White Ball for dancing, spaghetti and chicken hash at midnight– and most of all to mix and mingle with echelons of European aristocrats, working novelists and artists,  Hollywood and Broadway actors, international heads of state, filmmakers, socialites and middle-class friends from the Kansas town where Capote did research for his newly-famed novel.

The party itself, which meshed Frank Sinatra with First Lady Lynda Bird Johnson, Gloria Vanderbilt with the Maharani of Jaipur, and Grey Gardens’ Albert Maysles with Italian Princes Luciana Pignatelli, became the subject of a best selling book- and has since inspired masquerade mimicry across the globe.

Each year, Soho Grand picks up where Capote left off, transforming the sprawling lobby floor into the annual Black and White Gala, complete with masks, black tie dress, and the free flowing champagne that Capote’s guests enjoyed -exactly 50 years ago this year. Guests are welcome to mingle incognito, disguised with a mask of their choosing.

Esteemed guests will enjoy an evening hosted by At Large Magazine,  The Academy New York and Mick Rock with tiers of hors d’oeuvres and a premium open bar, equipped with Billecart Champagne. The dance floor will be maintained by Harley Viera-Newton, Vikas, Kristin Gallegos, Spiky Phil, Alejandra Sabillon and Wukash. At 1am, the party will erupt into an open Karaoke soiree in our Club Room, led by Nick Simmons and Wade Crescent of the infamous Karaoke spot -Blind Dragon.

And like Capote’s soiree, there are rules meant to be enjoyed – guests must wear black tie, masks are mandatory, and dancing is obligatory.
